Claire & Andrew planned a classic midsummer wedding at Rosecliff Mansion in Newport, RI. Part One will feature getting ready, first look and ceremony.
Both the bride and groom got ready at the Newport Marriott and had their First Look at the Elms Mansion. When you have a wedding reception at Rosecliff Mansion, part of your rental includes one hour of photography at one of their sister properties. Your choices are the Marble House, Elms Mansion or Chateau-sur-Mer. Your reservation in advance is required and the team of professionals at the Preservation Society of Newport County will guide you through the process. Be sure to ask about this special benefit!
I love photographing at the Elms Mansion with their meticulously cared for European gardens, limestone columns and 100+ year old beechwood trees. One of those beechwood trees came in handy and provided shelter when a brief passing July shower came through right in the middle of our portrait time! The sun came back out within ten minutes. Like Mark Twain wrote about New England’s weather shifts: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes”.
Upon arriving to Rosecliff Mansion, we took more portraits on the grounds starting on the back lawn with sweeping views of the ocean. On a sunny day, I typically start behind Rosecliff and work our way into the rose gardens. As the light on the front of the building begins to soften, that is the ideal time to create images in the front of the mansion. You’ll see those images in Part Two of Claire & Andrew’s wedding.
Their seaside ceremony was beautifully officiated by their dear friend. The guests took in the exquisite and exclusive views of the ocean as waves crashed in the background. There is nothing like a Newport wedding in the summertime!

When the carpet matches your wedding palette! Monochromatic vibes for the win.
Claire’s friends were so helpful and supportive. First Look:
Claire & Andrew’s parents had such a sweet relationship amongst all 4 of them. A beautiful dynamic to witness!
This is my favorite spot to use at the Elms Mansion for family portraits. When it’s heavily cloudy, we are able to set up right here with views of the architecture softened by the dripping greenery of the beechwood foliage. Everyone loves this background!
It got extremely dark all of the sudden. The air was thick and we could hear the rumblings of thunder. I kept us close to the beechwood tree and instructed everyone to go under there if the sky opened up. The parking lot with our cars is a little bit of a walk!
I’d say this brief stopover under the tree worked out nicely!
Just like that, the sun was shining bright for a wonderful couple!
Upon arrival to Rosecliff Mansion, we captured their ocean photos first and foremost.
I love this shade of green for Spring, Summer and early Fall weddings.
