There is something about Newport just after Christmas that feels straight out of a Hallmark movie. The lights are still glowing throughout downtown, the air feels crisp and quiet, and the ocean takes on this dramatic winter mood that makes everything feel even more romantic.
Conor knew he wanted that exact feeling when he planned his surprise proposal to Ali.
He reached out to me looking for a Newport proposal photographer because he wanted something intimate, cinematic, and completely unforgettable. He planned everything just after Christmas while the city was still decorated for the holidays, hoping they would get that magical winter atmosphere that makes Newport so special this time of year.
And somehow, they got even more than that.
The day of the proposal, fresh snow started falling across Newport and instantly transformed the entire coastline into a winter postcard. Between the snow-covered streets, the ocean views, and the quiet calm that only exists in Rhode Island during winter, the entire session felt unbelievably romantic.
Ali had absolutely no idea what was coming.
As they walked together through the snow, Conor found the perfect moment to stop, turn toward her, and get down on one knee. The second Ali realized what was happening, everything changed — tears, laughter, complete shock, and the kind of emotion that makes proposal photography so meaningful to capture.
Those are always my favorite moments as a photographer. Nothing posed. Nothing forced. Just two people completely locked into each other while the world disappears around them.
After the proposal, we spent time exploring some of my favorite winter locations around Newport for engagement portraits. The snowfall created the softest light imaginable, and every part of the session felt cozy, cinematic, and timeless. Honestly, it looked like a scene from a Christmas movie.
Winter proposals in Newport are incredibly underrated. Most couples immediately think of summer for Rhode Island engagement photos, but there is something uniquely romantic about the quiet coastal atmosphere during winter — especially around the holidays. The empty streets, ocean fog, seasonal lights, and occasional snowfall create such an intimate feeling for couples who want something different.
Conor pulled off the perfect surprise proposal for Ali, and I’m so grateful I got to document this moment for them.
If you’re planning a surprise engagement and looking for a Newport proposal photographer, winter might honestly be the most magical time to do it.
